Theory & practical Tests

Theory test

The theory test is divided into two parts:

  1. A multiple-choice test comprising 50 multiple-choice questions covering all aspects of the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43.
  2. A hazard perception test consisting of a series of video clips of actual road hazards that need to be identified. The pass mark is 44.

I have a selection of these videos on my ipad which we can go through together to give you an idea of what to expect. Below is a couple of links to the DSA's website where you can take a practice theory test or watch a video explaining the hazard perception test in more detail.

Hazard Perception Test

Practical test

The Driving Standards Agency states that most learners take at least 45 hours of professional tuition plus at least 20 hours with friends and family.

My average number of lessons is currently 35 hours with some private practice, although all learners are different and some will pass more quickly than others.

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions better known as Show Me Tell Me questions. The driving part of your test will last just under 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test. You will also be asked to do a 10 minute independent drive as part of your test. For example the examiner might ask you to follow signs to Derby until he tells you otherwise. It is then up to you to follow road signs and markings and do your own navigation.
